It is normal to see a lot of western style restaurants around the country. I can say wherever you are in Japan, even the very country side or remote places. An American franchise is very popular MAC.
My previous lunch was at a Japanese style hamburger restaurant. Beef were imported from Australia. Dressing is the mix of Japanese beet root (daikon大根) and soy sauce (shoyu醤油).

During traveling in Japan , we should try the true Japanese dishes as much as possible. I got so many recommendations from Japanese people. Breakfast is typically prepared in speed. Some people can go out after having a bowl of rice and nutto(納豆), but the others wants a little bit more amount. Most of people also wants to have miso soup.
During daytime, if you are not at home or hotel, I recommend you to try ramen.

For dinner in Japan , it is very interesting for its own character. I like the way they select the size of container for each dish and decorate them with natural materials.

It is normal if the waiter / waitress to ask if you want a SETTO MENU. I like to order the set menu (which is set by the cook) as I can try the other kind of food in the cheaper price. And i never forget to order the egg custard(chawan mushi 茶碗蒸し) which contains many tasty ingredients
When we talk about dinner, sushi is unavoidable. During the first days in Japan, I was confused between Sushi and Sashimi. I got a clue that when the meat is on the rice = SUSHI.
Many restaurants serve the combination of sushi and soba noodle(big weed noodle) or rice.
Sashimi can be ranked from the modest one to the luxury and fancy one.
There is a kind of sushi that is my favorite. It is the mixed of different kinds of seafood on the rice. Japanese call Shirashi Sushi.
I got the idea from this photo. Smoked salmon can be use and I did!!
